Surety Bond Expiration, Renewal, and Cancellation
The bond form and underlying obligation control the term, renewal, and cancellation process.
A bond can have a fixed term, renew on a stated cycle, or remain continuous until cancelled. The bond form and the underlying license, permit, or contract control which structure applies.
Term bonds
A term bond states an effective period. Continuing the underlying license or obligation may require a renewal certificate, continuation document, or newly issued bond before the term ends.
Continuous bonds
A continuous bond stays in force until the surety or principal follows the cancellation provisions. Continuous does not mean free forever. Premiums and underwriting requirements may still recur.
Cancellation does not erase earlier exposure
Bond forms commonly separate future acts from obligations that arose while the bond was active. The exact notice period and continuing liability depend on the form and governing law.
Practical renewal checklist
Track the bond and the supported license or contract together. Confirm the obligee's current form and amount before renewal, report legal-name or ownership changes, and keep proof that the renewal was accepted.
Before you purchase a bond
- Get the current written requirement or bond form.
- Confirm the obligee, principal name, amount, term, and filing method.
- Keep proof that the bond was accepted.
