Bonded vs. Insured vs. Licensed
These three terms describe different controls. A business may need one, two, or all three.
Licensed, insured, and bonded are not interchangeable. A license is permission from an authority. Insurance addresses covered risks under a policy. A bond guarantees a stated obligation to an obligee.
Licensed
A license shows that a person or business met the current requirements of the issuing agency for a defined activity. The scope, expiration, and status should be checked with that agency.
Insured
Insurance responds only to covered losses under the policy's terms, limits, deductibles, and exclusions. A certificate is evidence at a point in time, not a complete description of coverage.
Bonded
A bond supports a specific license, permit, contract, or duty. Verify the obligee, bond amount, term, and current status instead of relying on the word bonded alone.
What to verify
Ask for the license number and issuing agency, the relevant insurance certificate and policy details, and the bond form or confirmation tied to the specific obligation.
Before you purchase a bond
- Get the current written requirement or bond form.
- Confirm the obligee, principal name, amount, term, and filing method.
- Keep proof that the bond was accepted.
