Fort Collins Contractor License Requirements

License class, qualifications, insurance, and right-of-way permissions are separate checks.

Fort Collins publishes separate application procedures for general contractors and specialized trade contractors. Applicants should select the correct license class and submit the experience, supervision, exam, insurance, and other documents required for that class.

Use the current application packet

The City instructs applicants to complete the appropriate general or specialized trade application, choose the license or supervisor credential sought, and provide the required project verification and experience information. Incomplete applications are not accepted.

Confirm insurance and payroll requirements

The City's published procedures identify workers' compensation proof and employee information for regulated payroll trade employees when applicable. Confirm every current insurance requirement with Building Services before filing.

Right-of-way work is separate

Work in the public right-of-way requires its own city license and endorsements. The reviewed right-of-way materials list separate insurance and license-bond requirements, including a higher bond amount for utility boring.

Before you purchase a bond

  • Get the current written requirement or bond form.
  • Confirm the obligee, principal name, amount, term, and filing method.
  • Keep proof that the bond was accepted.
